Sheepskin slippers – comfort addiction for almost 200 years

In a fashion conscious and mass-produced consumer market that has seen the rise and fall of hundreds of shapes and styles of
footwear, the sheepskin slipper is one breed of footwear that has maintained constant global appeal.

For almost 200 years sheepskin slippers have graced their presence around the world as an item that is rich in comfort, warmth
and breathability - one that has become much of a ‘household favourite’.

The first pair of sheepskin slippers came out of an English tannery in 1830. Farming brothers James and Cyrus Clark noticed a
pile-up of sheepskin rug off-cuts, so together they decided to make a pair of sheepskin slippers using their ‘Singer’ sewing machine.

Business at C & J Clark was suddenly booming. Their sheepskin slipper, named the ‘Brown Petersburg’, was a huge success. Within
years of its unveiling, its unique design graced feet the length and breadth of the country and by 1842 sales were averaging 1000
pairs a month.

In the years that have passed, the consumer market has seen many changes, including the arrival of synthetics, changing fashion
trends, greater image awareness and mass production. We’ve seen footwear fashion come and go and come back again
– everything from winklepickers to boat shoes, Roman sandals to leather boots, moccasins to ugg boots and sneakers to wedges.

Sheepskin slippers however, have never wondered off the fashion radar. Produced from the world’s most natural insulating fibre,
they have remained very similar in style since their inception and are worn by women, men and children around the world. The
original sole was simply a soft sheepskin outer, but practically all of them now have hard rubber soles, meaning they can be worn
both inside and outside.

Worn with or without socks, sheepskin slippers are extremely breathable, meaning they can be worn repeatedly without being
invaded by unwanted odour build-up. This feature, aside from their comfort and warmth, remains one of their major draw cards.

Whether it be hopping out of bed or arriving home from a hard day’s work, the first thing people generally consider is donning
their sheepskin slippers. Although occasionally regarded by men as lacking ‘macho’ presence, these lightweight ‘house shoes’ are
growing more popular with both men and women every year.

Australia and New Zealand are two of the largest contributors to the sheepskin slipper market. Sheep are an iconic part of both
countries’ culture and economy. New Zealand has the highest number of sheep per capita, with sheep out-numbering the human
population by 12 to 1.

Two of Australasia’s largest premium sheepskin slipper companies are EMU Australia and Golden Fleece New Zealand. EMU Australia
is one of the leading footwear brands in Australia, whilst Golden Fleece New Zealand currently produces around 500 pairs of
sheepskin slippers per day.

Beautiful in their simplicity, unmistakable in their character and style, sheepskin slippers are a timeless classic that will exist
for centuries to come.
